General description of the Sokol helicopters:
The PZL W-3
Sokol is a light, twin engine, single main rotor, multipurpose
helicopter. Dual controls and co-pilot instrumentation are
fitted as an option (for IFR dual pilot operations). The
helicopter has a fully articulated four-blade main rotor and
three-blade tail rotor. All blades are of glass-fibre-epoxy with
an electrical de-icing system. The Sokol offers outstanding
performance in a variety of conditions and at high altitudes,
with a full-authority electronic engine control system and
highly reliable system redundancy, including twin-engines, dual
hydraulic boost system, a redundant lubrication system for the
main transmission, an independent fuel feed system for each
engine, and full ice protection. The passenger cabin
accommodates up to 12 people in comfortable seats that offer a
number of possible configurations. Sokol helicopters have been
used for a wide variety of applications, including
transportation, surveillance, rescue, medical, and so on. The
main rotor and its vibration absorber are mounted on the main
gearbox shaft. Two PZL-10W gas turbine engines (take-off power =
2 x 900 hp) made by WSK PZL RZESZÓW (Poland), and the
main gearbox are assembled as one unit and mounted in the
fuselage. The engines are mounted in front of the main gearbox.
Both engines have separate drive inputs to the main gearbox
(which reduces engine speed and drives the main and tail
rotors), cooler fans, and hydraulic, electrical and pneumatic
wheel-braking systems' accessories. Main and tail rotor control
forces are augmented by a dual hydraulic system. The fixed
tricycle landing gear incorporates the fully castoring nose gear
and the main gear fitted with disc brakes. Two sliding doors
provide easy entrance to and exit from the cabin. Luggage is
stored in a compartment aft of the cabin and is accessible from
inside and outside the cabin.
